NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Janine Adolphe was one of many New Rochelle residents to take advantage of free tax counseling provided by the AARP foundation on the first floor of the New Rochelle Public Library Thursday.
Adolphe comes every year to receive help on her taxes, and always comes away happy.
“They are very good,” Adolphe said. “They ask you questions. If you forget about something they ask you did you contribute to this or that."
The free assistance is offered at the New Rochelle Public Library Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. through April 17.
“We are here to help those that are low to middle income who are a little uncomfortable with filling out their taxes,” said AARP volunteer tax aide Tim Oberg.
AARP tax aides are administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteers help people with basic tax returns, particularly the elderly, handicapped and non-English speaking taxpayers according to information provided by the library.
The AARP website provides a list of important documents to bring to tax counseling appointments.
Walk-ins are on a first-come, first–served basis. No appointments are taken. Library doors open at 9 a.m. The library suggests people in need of help with their taxes come in as soon as possible since it is extra busy in February and mid-March.
Free tax help is also offered in other communities such as Mount Vernon, Eastchester, and Yonkers.
