NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Rep. Nita Lowey (D – District 18) met with 30 Advanced Placement students from two New Rochelle High School classes, macroeconomics and government, on Monday to discuss Pres. Barack Obama’s State of the Union address that will take place on Tuesday.
“I love getting out and meeting with students, and learning what’s on their minds,” Lowey said.
Lowey discussed issues such as job creation, tax relief, national security and education with students before answering their own personal inquiries about funding for furthering their education.
In addition to conversing with students, the member of Congress also announced she will host live social media chats with students via Facebook and Twitter before and after Obama’s speech.
Lowey will also answer questions, and give her opinions on issues Obama discusses when the president presents Congress with his 2012 priorities.
Student Andrew Zigmont said he was happy to have had the firsthand opportunity to see and ask direct questions to a member of the United States House of Representatives.
“You learn a little bit more about being a politician,” Zigmont said.
